Stereo Equipment

I don’t expect to have a lots of comments, but I have a request. If you know anything about stereo equipment and/or can recommend equipment or good references, let me know with a comment on this post! I’m thinking about buying a receiver and a pair of speakers for my living room and I don’t want junk. I listen to a lot of music, but also enjoy movies so I’m looking for a good A/V (home theater) receiver. I’d just want to buy something I’m going to be happy with for quite awhile, instead of for just a year or two. If you can help, I’d definitely be grateful!

what i did was go to a high end audio store in my area, and get lots and lots of information from them. i went with the lowest end of the high end, stuff that was reviewed as being a good bang for the buck. the store i went to has used equipment which is a fantastic deal, because audiophiles take meticulous care of their stuff… so it was like getting new stuff for a lot less money.

i got a separate receiver and amp, both by adcom. my speakers are vandersteen, the smallest ones they make. vinyl is still important to me, so i got a used denon turntable and i had to get a separate photo pre-amp, that is by rotel.

i think the speakers are key. they are large, large enough to be a bit of a problem sometimes, but i have really never heard anything as good outside of that store. i’ve tried replacing them with smaller speakers that got rave reviews on amazon and those were just unlistenable in comparison– i’ve resigned myself to living with large speakers since they have now spoiled me and i know i won’t be able to stand anything else. i’ve priced new vandersteens and the price made my hair stand on end– i doubt i’d ever try to get a new pair of vandersteens that are wall-mountable or smaller, just because of the cost.

i got this system about ten years ago, it has never needed a repair or maintenance, and i don’t see ever replacing it unless it just plain wears out.
