Rear Fog

One of my purchases in Roswell was a rear fog light lens. I’m in the process of purchasing a European head light switch that will allow me to turn on and off the rear red fog light after I wire it up. Here’s how the car looks with it’s new rear fog light!

European manufacturer’s would do well to fit a rear fog light to all their passenger and heavy vehicle categories sold in the North American market. They can reference SAE J1319.

North American domestic made products would also be wise to catch-up.

The rear fog light can be a pain mis-used, but by the same token, it can and does save lives.

Lazy, neigh -negligent (FMVSS) lighting regulations that do not ‘mandate’ the item are of no help either, and only serve to keep many folk ignorant of the important feature. Appalling.

By now you will have a switch, but if anyone else cannot source a suitable switch, I will suggest a 3-pole type bearing a yellow LED or pilot light. This ‘tell-tale’ is mandatory. The lamp is earthed, a wire is run fromt it to the switch. The switch is earthed too. You then take a ‘positive’ feed from the front fog lights positive, if these are fitted, OR from the low-beam if not.

A rear fog light offers many seconds of advanced warning compared to a vehicles standard taillights, therefore keep it’s use restricted to ’seriously reduced visibility conditions’, not when it is merely ‘misty’.
